World Development Information Day
In 1972, the United Nations General Assembly decided to establish World Development Information Day, coinciding with United Nations Day on 24 October. The purpose of the General Assembly each year was to draw the attention of world public opinion to development problems and to emphasize the need to strengthen international cooperation to solve them. This day was also recognized as the date of adoption of the International Development Strategy for the Second National Development Decade in 1970.
On 17 May 1972, the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) proposed measures to disseminate information and mobilize public opinion about trade and development problems. These became known as Resolution 3038 (XXVII), passed by the United Nations General Assembly on 19 December 1972.
The resolution called for the establishment of a World Development Information Day to draw the attention of people around the world to development problems. Another objective of this event is to explain to the general public why it is necessary to strengthen international cooperation to find ways to solve these problems.
The Assembly also decided that the day should coincide with United Nations Day to emphasize the central role of development in the work of the United Nations. World Development Information Day was first organized on 24 October 1973.
