Thomas Anthony Hollander was born on 25 August 1967 in Bristol and grew up in Oxford. Hollander’s father is a Czech Jew who converted to Catholicism in the family, and his mother is British. Hollander was raised as a Christian. The family background was artistic and musical: his grandfather, Hans Hollander, was a musicologist who wrote books about the jazz musician Janacek. Hollander’s parents were teachers, his father in the science department of a school in Oxford.
Thomas Anthony Hollander is a British actor. Hollander trained at the National Youth Theater and won an Ian Charleson Award in 1992 for his performance as Witwood in The Way of the World. He made his Broadway debut in 1998 in David Hare’s play The Judas Kiss. His performance as Henry Carr in a revival of Tom Stoppard’s play Travesties led to nominations for both an Oliver Award and a Tony Award.
In television, Hollander starred in the BBC sitcom Rave (2010–2014), which he co-wrote. He received a BAFTA Award for Best Sitcom for this series in 2011. He was awarded a BAFTA Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in the BBC series The Night Manager.
Hollander portrayed Truman in the Hulu series Feud: Capote vs. the Swans (2024), King George V in The Lost Prince (2001) and The King’s Man (2021), King George III in the FX HBO miniseries John Adams (2008). The captain’s role is important. Other credits include Doctor Thorn (2016), The White Lotus (2022), and Harley Quinn (2020–present).
From 2022 to 2023, Hollander returns to the Almeida Theater to play the lead role of Boris Berezovsky in the major run of Patriots, a play about life in the downtown Russian elite square by Peter Morgan. In 2024 he portrayed author Truman Capote on the Hulu limited series Feud: Capote vs. the Swans on FX.
