The Container Store Specialty Retail Chain
Garrett Boone and John Mullen set up a store in Dallas. With the support of his family, he opened the first grocery store on 1 July 1978. The store introduced a new retail line: home storage and organization. The following year Kip Tindale and his wife joined the founding team.
In 1982, the company adopted a computerized management system, which brought the company almost to the ground. The company’s sales boomed with the opening of the Houston store in 1988. It opened its first location outside Texas in 1991 in Atlanta, Georgia.
Opened its first NY store in 2000, and opened its first LA store in 2006. In 1999, The Container Store purchased one of its main suppliers, Alfa International, a Swedish corporation specializing in shelving and storage units.
The Container Store filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on December 23, 2024. No stores will be affected by the closure, but the company said that may change during the process. The Container Store Group, Inc., is an American specialty retail chain that offers storage and organization products and custom closets.
