Kolkata Police imposed Section 163 amid protests over the rape-murder case of a doctor at RG Kar Medical College.  Section 163. Power to issue order in urgent cases of nuisance or apprehended danger.

The Kolkata administration has imposed curfew for the next seven days around RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where a junior doctor was brutally raped and murdered last week.

In an order, the Kolkata Police said Section 163 of the Indian Civil Defense Code, 2023 (formerly Section 144 of the CrPC) prohibits ongoing protests, rallies, processions, dharnas or demonstrations, and any gathering of five or more persons in the vicinity of the medical college.
