Kumar was born on 1 March 1951 in Bakhtiyarpur, Bihar. His father Kaviraj Ram Lakhan Singh was an Ayurvedic physician; His mother Parameshwari Devi was from Nepal. Nitish belongs to the Kurmi farmer caste. His nickname is ‘Munna’. Nitish Kumar is an Indian politician serving as the 22nd Chief Minister of Bihar since 22 February 2015, having previously held the position from 2005 to 2014 and briefly in 2000. Holding this post, he has been the Chief Minister of Bihar for the longest period. His 9th term.

He is the leader of Janata Dal (United). Earlier, Kumar had also served as a Union Minister as a member of the Samata Party. He was a member of the Samata Party till 2005 and the Janata Dal from 1989 to 1994. Kumar first entered politics as a member of the Janata Dal, becoming an MLA in 1985. A socialist, Kumar founded the Samata Party with George Fernandes. in 1994.

In August 2022, Kumar left the NDA and rejoined the Grand Alliance and UPA. In January 2024, Kumar will once again leave the Grand Alliance and join the NDA.
