National Postal Day

National Post Day is celebrated every year on 10 October in India and 9 October is celebrated globally as World Post Day. The purpose of celebrating this day is to remember and commemorate the role played by India Post from Saurashtra in the past. Post in India was established by Lord Dalhousie in 1854.

The full name of the PIN code in India is the Postal Index Number. This 6-digit system was introduced on 15 August 1972 by Sriram Bhikaji Velankar, appointed as Additional Secretary to the Union Ministry of Communications. The first digit of the PIN code indicates the area. The second digit indicates the sub-region. The third digit indicates the district and the last three digits indicate the post office under which the address falls.

This day is a day to honor the hard work and dedication of the postal employees of the country. The day also recognizes the role played by the Indian Postal Department over the last 150 years.
