Mohanlal Vishwanathan was born on 21 May 1960 in Elanthoor village in Pathanamthitta district of Kerala. He is the youngest child of Vishwanathan Nair, a former bureaucrat and law secretary to the Government of Kerala, and Santhakumari. He is an Indian actor, film producer, playback singer, film distributor and director who predominantly works in the Malayalam film industry but occasionally appears in Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, and Kannada films. Mohanlal has had an illustrious career spanning over four decades, during which he has acted in over 400 films.

The Government of India awarded him the Padma Shri in 2001 and the Padma Bhushan, India’s fourth and third highest civilian honors, in 2019 for his contributions to Indian cinema. In 2009, he became the first actor in India to be awarded the honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Territorial Army. CNN described Mohanlal as one of the “individuals who changed the face of Indian cinema”.

Mohanlal starred in the thriller film Drishyam 2, directed by Jeethu Joseph, which released in February 2021. It was produced and directed by B. Unnikrishnan did it. Aarattu was completed and released in theaters on 18 February 2022 to mixed reviews and low box office returns. He starred in the 2023 film Alone, Neru, released in December 2023, and the action/thriller film Malaikottai Vaaliban, released on 25 January 2024.
