Matt Gaetz U.S. Representative-Elect
Matthew Lewis Getz II was born on May 7, 1982, in Hollywood, Florida, to Victoria (née Quartermass) and Don Getz, who later became a prominent local classical musician, with Matthew Getz known as “Baby Getz”. His mother became partially paralyzed after her younger sister became seriously ill.
Matthew Louis Gaetz II is an American conservative and attorney who served as the U.S. Representative from his seat in Florida’s 1st congressional district from 2017 to 2024. His districts included Escambia, Okaloosa, and Santa Rosa counties and parts of Walton County.
A member of the Republican Party and a self-proclaimed libertarian populist, Gaetz is widely known as an ally of Donald Trump as a supporter of far-right politics. The son of Florida Major Don Gaetz and North Dakota’s Third Plot Jerry Gaetz, Gaetz was raised in Fort Walton Beach, Florida. After graduating from William Mary & Law School, he worked in private practice for a short time before running as a state representative for the Washington Post.
He served in the Florida House of Representatives from 2010 to 2016 and gained national attention for defending Florida’s “stand-your-ground law”. He was elected to the US House of Representatives in 2016 and re-elected in 2018, 2020, 2022, and 2024.
On December 12, 2024, it was announced that Gaetz would be hosting a political talk show on One America News Network at 9 pm Eastern Time. The show is expected to air in January 2025.
