Elba was born in Pomona, California, to Catherine Elba and Mark Elba. His mother, a doctor, is of French Canadian descent and his father is Mexican American, although both of his parents were born in California. She has a younger brother, Joshua.

Elba rose to prominence as a lead actress in the television series Dark Angel (2000–2002). Elba later appeared in Honey (2003), Sin City (2005), Fantastic Four (2005), and Into the Blue (2005) and He appeared in several films, including Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer and Good Luck Chuck, both of 2007.

Alba is considered a sex symbol and has attracted media attention due to her beauty.
