International Blasphemy Rights Day
September 30 is International Blasphemy Rights Day (“BRD”). When the Center for Inquiry (CFI) launched BRD in 2009, the primary goal was to draw attention to the continuing harsh suppression of religious dissent. Blasphemy Day, also known as International Blasphemy Day or International Day for the Right to Blasphemy, raises awareness of freedom of expression in relation to blasphemy and blasphemous entities.
Especially open criticism of religion which is considered a crime in many countries. Blasphemy Day was introduced as a worldwide observance by the Center for Inquiry in 2009. Events around the world on the first annual Blasphemy Day in 2009 included an art exhibit in Washington, DC, and a free speech festival in Los Angeles.
