Beijing Great Wall National Park
The Great Wall National Park is located in the northeastern region of China, about 43 miles (70 km) northeast of Beijing. This national park is in the development stage, with an initial protected area of approximately 23.2 square miles (60 square km). Furthermore, the park’s boundaries would follow the Great Wall, providing protection for a little more than half a mile (2 km) on either side of the wall. The Badaling area of the Great Wall serves as the foundation and most popular part of the national park. This is the most visited part of the wall.
The Great Wall of China is an interplay between man-made walls, steep hills, and other aspects of nature that serve as barriers. Together, these aspects cover a total distance of 5,500 miles (8,850 km). The man-made wall is an amazing feat that extends for 3,889 miles (6,259 km). Most of the wall is inaccessible to visitors. The portion of the wall that is accessible in the national park extends only a few miles (3.74 km) and allows access to several watch towers. The impressive wall stands 20 feet (6 m) high and has a normal height of about 26 feet (7.8 m). It has been the inspiration for many films, books, poems, and other cultural celebrations. This is one of the greatest achievements in human history. Accordingly, it is one of the seven wonders of the world.
The Great Wall of China extends 5,500 miles (8,850 km) from the China–Korea border to the Gobi Desert. About 1,387 miles (2,232 km) of the wall takes advantage of steep hills and similar natural obstacles, while another 223 miles (359 km) are formed by ditches. The more impressive physically constructed wall covers a distance of 3,889 miles (6,259 km). Only 2.3 miles (3.74 km) of the Badaling area and 19 watchtowers have been restored and opened to visitors. There is a cable car that provides senior citizens and physically more handicapped people an opportunity to experience this miracle of mankind.
