Lee was born into a sporting family. His aunt was a professional speed skater in China. His father played football in college, while his mother ran track in college. Ann Lee is an American tennis player. Her highest career ranking by the WTA is 44, and she was the runner-up in the girls’ singles final at the 2017 Wimbledon Championships.
Li reached her first junior Grand Slam singles final at Wimbledon in 2017. In the first All-American Girls final since 1979, unseeded Li lost to third-seeded Claire Liu in three sets. Two weeks later, Lee won her first professional title at a $15,000 tournament on the ITF Circuit in Evansville, Indiana.
She qualified for her first WTA 500 since the 2022 Bad Homburg Open at the 2024 San Diego Open, defeating Kayla Day in the last round of qualifying but losing to eventual runner-up, Marta Kostyuk, in the main draw.
In July, Li reached the quarterfinals in Palermo with wins over third seeds Peyton Stearns and Erica Andreeva, where she saved a match point. She reached her first semi-final of the season at the 2024 Mérida Open, defeating Jil Teichmann.
