I-League Football League

In 1996, in an effort to bring professionalism to Indian football, the first domestic league was launched in India, known as the National Football League. Despite that ambition, this has not been achieved to date. During the National Football League days, the league suffered from poor infrastructure and the unprofessionalism of its clubs. One club in the league, FC Kochi, folded in 2002 after it was revealed that the club had not paid salaries since 2000 after incurring losses of ₹2.5 crore per season.

The I-League, formerly known as the National Football League, is the joint premier football league of India along with the Indian Super League. For sponsorship reasons, the league is officially known as the Hero I-League. It is currently being contested by 11 clubs across the country.

A total of ten clubs have become champions since the inception of the I-League. Dempo has won the most titles in the history of the league and has been champion three times. Churchill Brothers, Mohun Bagan, Bengaluru and Gokulam Kerala have won the league twice. Salgaocar, Aizawl, Minerva Punjab, Chennai City, Roundglass Punjab and Mohammedan have won it once each.
