Punjab National Bank, established in 1894 in the city of Lahore in undivided India, has the distinction of being the first Indian bank which was started entirely with Indian capital. Punjab National Bank was nationalized along with 13 other banks in July 1969. Growing from its humble beginnings, Punjab National Bank has today grown tremendously in size and importance and has become the number one banking institution in India.
Punjab National Bank is a major and old bank in India. It is a scheduled bank. Punjab National Bank (PNB) was registered under the Indian Companies Act on May 19, 1894, with its office at Anarkali Bazaar, Lahore. Punjab National Bank is the second largest public sector commercial bank in India and has approximately 4,500 branches across 764 cities in India. It has about 37 lakh customers.
According to Bankers’ Almanac London, this bank is ranked 248th among the largest banks in the world. In fiscal year 2007, the bank had total assets of US$60 billion. Punjab National Bank has a banking subsidiary in the UK, as well as branches in Hong Kong and Kabul and representative offices in Almaty, Shanghai, and Dubai.
