2024: Which Two Indian Heritage Conservation Projects Will Win UNESCO’s Asia-Pacific Award?

Two Indian heritage conservation projects – the Abthashayeshwar Temple Conservation Project in Thukkachi, Tamil Nadu, and the Industries Conservation Project in Mumbai, Maharashtra – have won the Asia-Pacific Awards 2024 for Cultural Heritage Conservation. These two heritage sites are among the eight winners of the 2024 Asia-Pacific Prize for Archaeological Heritage Conservation in the Asia Pacific region.

The Foundation (United Nations Startup, Scientific and Cultural Organization) announced the award winners on 6 December 2024 at its regional office in Bangkok, Thailand. Abathsahayeshwar Temple Conservation Project won the Murti Award in the Darshan Award category.

Lord Dakshinamurthy (Lord Shiva) is the presiding deity of the Abathasahayeswara (Aaptasahayeswara) temple in Thukkachi village in Tiruvarur district of Tamil Nadu. The temple was awarded a UNESCO Distinguished Award for its use of modern engineering expertise and know-how of Hindu temple builders (sthapathis) for structural conservation.

The BJPCI (Sir Byramji Jeejeebhoy Parsi Charitable Institution) conservation project won the Merit Award of UNESCO’s Asia-Pacific Award for Cultural Heritage Conservation 2024. BJPCI School building, built in 1908 in Gothic style, is located in Mumbai, Maharashtra. It was created to promote education among the economically weaker sections of the society. The renovation work was carried out during the two-month school summer holidays.

The UNESCO Asia-Pacific Prize for Cultural Heritage Conservation was established by UNESCO in 2000. The award recognizes the efforts of individuals and organizations in the restoration, conservation and transformation of structures and buildings of heritage value in Asia and the Pacific.

A seven-member jury of conservation professionals with expertise in architecture, archeology, and community development selected the 2024 UNESCO laureates based on three criteria: their understanding of place, technical achievements, and sustainability and impact.

Members of the international jury were conservation experts in architecture, archeology, and community development.
